The group has been hired to spy on the borders of the evil kingdom of Deserata home to the Jkennis (Queen) Distaria I also known as the Dark Woman. While scouting the borders of the kingdom one member of the party a priestess named Aki has been kidnapped.
The party has arrived in the village of Stephens Hold looking for their missing companion Aki. . The village is ruled by a brother and sister that seem intent on killing each other for the throne. So far the party has been approached by each side to help secure the throne. So far there is no sign of Aki.
Serif goes to the local temple of Chaldisaya on the invitation of the local patriarch named Hallistor. The patriarch takes Serif into the temple. Instead of the regular statue of Chaldisaya a more lurid female statue stands in its place. The figure is that of the Jkennis of Deserata (Distaria I) in the form of the Dark Lady of Pleasure. At the feet of the statue is a smaller one of Serif (with wings) in supplication. The patriarch confides in Serif that he see’s Serifs appearance in the city as a good sign from the Dark Lady.
When Serif gets back to the rest of the party he tells them what he saw but the party is slow to follow him back to the temple. When they get to the temple they wake Hallistor up and want him to show them the inside of the shrine. Inside stands the statue of Chaldisaya along with the Chaldite saints and martyrs. On their way back to their lodgings the Kenna of the city visits Estryellia. He informs her that he intended to ask for her hand in marriage from her father. This horrifies Estryellia (she’s 13, he’s 40) who feels that her adventuring career has just begun. Although she doesn’t think her father will give her away to the Kenna, she is glad that it will take at least a month to reach him in the far continent of Sadakadish.
